As we embrace the new year, it's time to recalibrate our focus towards one of the most critical aspects of athletic success: Nutrition. Proudly brought to you by Bolder Athlete, this week's newsletter is dedicated to simplifying the intricacies of macronutrient balance and how it fuels your training, recovery, and overall wellness - and making it easy for you.

Bolder Athlete recognizes the unique needs of Masters Athletes, delivering training that goes beyond simply ‘scaling’ workouts designed for younger athletes to offer age-specific training created just for you. Safe training is prioritized with the Bolder Athlete smart-volume system, significantly reducing injury risk and promoting longevity in the sport - learn more here.

In this newsletter, we delve deep into the art of calculating daily food intake, offering a practical, easy-to-follow approach that resonates with the needs of masters athletes like you.

Let's jump right in and discover how to make your nutrition work for you in 2024!

The Easy Way to Calculate Your Calories and Macros:

As we step into 2024, the emphasis on nutrition as the cornerstone of your fitness goals cannot be overstated. Proper nutrition is the fuel that powers your training, recovery, and overall well-being. Embracing a well-structured dietary approach is crucial, especially for Masters Athletes who require a balance of rigorous training and nutritional support. This is where I really like Alex Hormozi's Nutritional Framework. It provides a simple and clear path for managing your dietary needs in alignment with your fitness goals.

Alex Hormozi's Nutritional Framework

  1. Define Your Goal & Caloric Intake: Begin by identifying your objective - whether it's weight gain, maintenance, or loss. Utilize the chart to find a daily caloric target that corresponds with your body weight and specific goal.

  2. Protein Intake Calculation: Protein is key. Target around one gram per pound of your body weight from lean protein sources. This intake can be fine-tuned to suit your dietary preferences and needs.

  3. Calculating Remaining Calories: Deduct the calories from your protein intake from your daily calorie target. This number represents your allowance for other macronutrients.

  4. Meal Customization: Use the remaining calorie budget to include carbohydrates and fats, keeping in mind the flexibility within your total caloric limit. Choose nutritious options that support your training and recovery.

Simplified: Implementing the Method

  • Start with Your Body Weight: Consult the chart, select your weight and goal (e.g., maintenance, weight loss).

  • Calculate Daily Calories: Multiply your body weight by the recommended multiplier for your goal.

  • Determine your Protein Calories: Multiply 1g of protein x your bodyweight.

  • Subtract your Protein Calories from your total Calories: What’s remaining is essentially whatever you want to eat. If you prefer ice cream… go for it. Though there are smarter combinations of carbs and fats to help you feel more satiated!

  • Adjust as Needed: Begin with the suggested intake and modify based on your progress and comfort level.

Why This Approach Works for Masters Athletes

  • Tailored Nutrition: This method is designed to meet the specific dietary requirements of Masters Athletes.

  • Supports Recovery and Performance: Adequate protein and calories are essential for optimal recovery and maintaining high-level performance.

  • Flexibility and Personalization: This approach offers the freedom to adjust your diet based on training intensity and personal preferences.

Embrace this nutrition framework as a key tool in achieving your fitness goals in 2024. Remember, nutrition is a journey that complements your training regime.
