I'm still catching my breath from the whirlwind of emotions and sheer physical effort that was the 2024 Masters CrossFit Games. This year wasn't just another competition; it was a battle against my own body, against the odds, and against history itself.
The Journey So Far: Since qualifying for the first time in 2018 and finishing a promising 3rd, I've been on an unprecedented streak. Winning every Masters CrossFit Games since then, I've now set a historical record with 5 consecutive wins—a feat unmatched in the history of Masters athletics.
The Challenge: Entering this year's competition, I was nursing a strained soleus calf muscle. The concern was palpable. Starting off with a disappointing 10th place in the first event, I knew I had to dig deep. The road back to the top was fraught with challenges:
Event 2: Four 600m runs with heavy deadlifts. My calf screamed in agony during the 4th run, but I held on for a 2nd place finish.
Event 3: Another 2nd place, missing first by a mere second, inching me closer to the top.
Event 4: A speed snatch ladder, not my strongest suit, but I managed a respectable 12th place.
Event 5: A grueling chipper ending with 75 wall balls. A 3rd place finish here was crucial.
Event 6: I topped off day two with a 1st place on the brutal echo bike, selling my soul to securing the lead.
The Climb to Victory: By the end of day two, I was on top of the leaderboard, but the battle was far from over.
Event 7: A heart-stopping 2nd place by just .7 seconds.
Event 8: A 4th place in a workout designed for giants, showcasing strength and resilience.
Event 9: Ended day three with a 10th place finish, setting a personal record front squat of 360lbs.
The Final Push: The last day, a single event, I held a 15-point lead. The pressure was immense, but I knew I could crush this event, finishing with 16 unbroken bar muscle-ups, securing my 5th title.
Reflections: Beaten up, sore everywhere, I'm still in disbelief. This year was, by far, the most challenging effort. Each event was a test of not just physical strength but mental fortitude. The support from our Bolder Athlete community, my family, and friends was the wind beneath my wings.
Thank You: To all of you who've followed, supported, and believed in me, thank you. This victory isn't just mine; it's ours. You've been with me through every rep, every run, every moment of doubt.
This journey isn't just about lifting weights or running fast; it's about defying the limits we set for ourselves. It's about proving that age is just a number, that with determination, we can achieve the extraordinary.
Here's to pushing boundaries, to redefining what's possible, and to the journey that continues to inspire us all. My story isn't just about winning games; it's about winning life. It's a reminder that no matter where you start, with dedication, a bit of sweat, and maybe a lot of chalk, you can redefine what's possible.
Stay Bold,
Jason
