I’m Jason Grubb, 5-time CrossFit Games Masters Champ and 5-time Legends Championship winner, currently deep in prep for the 2025 Games in Columbus.

Last week, I took a family vacation to outside Butte, Montana, near Anaconda—6,000 feet above sea level. It was what I call a “train-cation”—blending family time with the final week of a 6 week Bolder Athlete Games Prep cycle.

The thin air made every rep a battle—but I got it done. Here’s what it’s like to train hard on vacation, how I adapted, and how you can crush workouts anywhere as we head into the 2025 Bolder Athlete Legends Online Qualifier.

My Montana Train-Cation

Picture Montana’s mountains: pines, crisp air, my kids laughing nearby.

I was in the final week of Bolder Athlete’s 6-week Games Prep cycle—grueling workouts blending:

  • Strength

  • Gymnastics

  • Endurance

At 6,000 feet, oxygen is ~15% thinner (Journal of Applied Physiology, 2016), so:

  • Toes-to-Bar felt heavier

  • Echo bike got spicy

  • Every movement demanded more grit

I trained in a local gym (Smelter City CrossFit)—hitting heavy squats, heaps of lunges, bar muscle-ups, and longer metcons under the big sky.

Family balance? Not easy. I trained when I could, and hiked, kayaked, and enjoyed the fireworks with the family.

Montana’s beauty fueled my soul—the grind kept me Games-ready.

Adapting to Thin Air

Training at altitude isn’t just about "pushing harder." Here's how I adapted:

📚 International Journal of Sports Medicine (2018):

“Hydration + pacing = fatigue prevention at 6,000 feet.”

Here’s what I did:

  • Hydrated hardLMNT + Water

  • Paced smart – Found that I needed to pace workouts and training a bit smarter to allow for a bit more breathing.

  • Trusted the process – The Bolder Athlete strength + skill + cardio blend builds durability for Masters. I just needed to get the work done.

By week’s end, I felt more resilient—mentally and physically. And grateful to be heading into a de-load week.

The Mindset: No Excuses

Show up. No matter what.

Montana’s altitude was my latest test—and I leaned in.

Family, travel, thin air—no excuses.
