Hey crew,
I’m Jason Grubb, 5-time CrossFit Games Masters Champion, 5-time Legends Champion, and founder of Bolder Athlete, gearing up for the 2025 Games in Columbus. To our new subscribers—welcome! I’m thrilled you’re here. My story isn’t about being a natural athlete; it’s about grit, consistency, and defying age.

My Journey: From Couch to Champion
Back in my late 30s, I was a busy dad and wedding photographer with a Master’s in Counseling Psychology. Fitness? Nowhere on my radar. I was out of shape, unhappy with how I felt, and stuck after years of running and biking that didn’t work. At 38, a friend dragged me to a CrossFit gym in 2013, and everything changed. I started slow—clumsy lifts, gasping for air—but I showed up every day. Consistency turned me from a couch potato into a 5-time CrossFit Games Masters Champ.
With consistent training, smarter nutrition, and a relentless mindset, I became a champion.
Conquering the CrossFit Games & Legends
My competitive fire ignited in 2018, placing third in the Men’s 40-44 division at the Reebok CrossFit Games. In 2019, I won my first title, kicking off a streak: five straight Masters Championships from 2019 to 2024 in the 40-44 and 45-49 divisions. The 2024 Games tested me—a strained calf muscle, a rough start, but I battled back, nailing unbroken bar muscle-ups to win the final event and seal the championship. I’ve also dominated the Legends Championship since 2020: a COVID-era parking lot in Arizona, a fun-fueled 2021 in San Diego, a clutch 2022 in Cookeville, and back-to-back wins at ASU in 2023-2024.
My Philosophy: Boring Stuff Wins
How do I do it at 49? “Boring stuff wins.” No flashy trends, just routine: consistent training, smart nutrition, and recovery like mobility work, saunas, and sleep. My psychology background helps—I know mindset is half the battle. I balance family life with training, proving you don’t need to sacrifice one for the other. As Bolder Athlete’s founder, I’ve coached hundreds worldwide to get fit, focusing on sustainable habits for Masters over 35. My 500+ Bolder Athlete crew pushes me daily—it’s a community, not a solo grind.
Hacks to Start Your Bold Journey
Ready to chase your own goals? Here’s how to begin:
Start Small: Commit to one habit this week. Maybe it’s adding 20 pushups to your morning, right after you pour your first cup of coffee.
Fuel Smart: Eat a protein-packed breakfast… like Greek Yogurt, or pasture raised eggs… paired with any kind of fruit for some carbs.
Set a Goal: Write one target, like “5 unbroken pull-ups” or a Sub 8:00 Mile.
Recover Well: Prioritize sleep—8 hours nightly keeps me sharp at 49. Use Thirdzy to improve your sleep performance.

Coaching Takeaway: Age Is Just a Number
Five CrossFit Games titles and five Legends wins prove it: start where you are, stay consistent, and embrace the grind. I was a sedentary dad at 38—now I’m a champ at 49. Today is a great time to start.
I started something new at age 38 - I was scared, nervous, but hopeful that I would enjoy it.
And I did… What’s your next bold start?
