Semifinals kick off today—April 3rd, 2025—and I’m sitting here, 49 years old, about to step into my 10th year competing in a CrossFit qualifier post-Open. Ten years. It’s wild to think about, and I’m beyond grateful for where this ride’s taken me. Let’s unpack this milestone, reflect a bit, and maybe light a spark for your own journey.

A Decade of Grit
Back in 2015, I stumbled into my first CrossFit Open—38 years old, out of shape, and clueless about what I’d signed up for. By 2016, I was hooked, chasing leaderboard spots with no clue I’d still be here a decade later, stronger and healthier than I ever dreamed. I didn’t start as a champ—I was just a guy who said yes to the grind. Now, at the 10-year mark, I’m a 5-time Masters CrossFit Games winner, still toeing the line for Semifinals. That’s not bragging; it’s proof this sport doesn’t care about your age if you don’t.
I love the training—the sweat, the struggle, the small wins. I’m thankful for a game that lets me compete at 49, pushing limits I didn’t know I had. I’m not some prodigy—I’ve got plenty I’m lousy at (ask my family about my cooking). But this? This I’m damn good at. To be among the world’s best Masters athletes? That’s a gift I don’t take lightly.
The Journey’s the Thing
Looking back, it’s not the podiums that hit hardest—it’s the process. The early mornings in the garage, the late nights tweaking Bolder Athlete programs, the days I doubted I could keep up. I started as a wedding photographer, psychotherapist, and poker player—fitness wasn’t even on the radar. But CrossFit grabbed me, and I ran with it. Ten years later, I’m still learning, still growing, still getting better. That’s the magic: it’s not about where you start; it’s about where you’re willing to go.
Coaching Takeaway: It’s Not Too Late
I’m not here to flex—I’m here to share what’s real. I’m not perfect, and I don’t have it all figured out. But 10 years in, I know this: you don’t need to be great at everything to be great at something. Find your thing, dig in, and stick with it. Age? Just a number. Talent? Nice, but grit wins. I’m living proof you can start late, stumble plenty, and still end up somewhere incredible.
Your Move: 3 Steps to Start
Inspired? Good—let’s make it actionable. Here’s how to kick off your own decade of bold:
Pick One Thing: Doesn’t have to be CrossFit—maybe it’s a 5K, a pull-up, or just walking more. Start small, but start.
Rest Like You Mean It: Prioritize sleep—try Thirdzy or just dim the lights an hour before bed. Recovery fuels progress.
Show Up: Consistency beats perfection. Miss a day? Fine. Get back at it tomorrow.
Semifinals are my proving ground this weekend, but your journey’s just as real. Let’s keep pushing—together.
